Things to consider when using self storage

Here’s a handy checklist of DOs and DON’Ts:

  1. Always use good quality storage boxes. We sell quality boxes of different sizes.
  2. Fill boxes to capacity – do not overfill. Partially filled or bulging boxes may tip over or collapse.
  3. Heavy items should be packed into small boxes so they are easy to lift.
  4. Label or number boxes for easy reference.
  5. Make up a list of your stored items and keep it in a safe place.
  6. Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap or packing paper.
  7. Dishes and glassware should be wrapped in tissue paper or bubble wrap.
  8. Garden equipment should be cleaned.
  9. Wrap table legs with bubble wrap to protect them.
  10. Wardrobe boxes allow you to store your clothes on hangers to keep their shape.
  11. Place heavy or bulky items in the unit first to provide a good solid base.
  12. Plan your storage space. Put those items that you need to get to most often near the front, close to the door.
  13. To maximise space, stack similar sized boxes together.
  14. Do not place heavy items on sofas or mattresses.
  15. Always place a protective cover over your soft furnishings.
  16. Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth or paper to separate them.
  17. Leave refrigerator doors open for ventilation.
  18. Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in mirror boxes, marked “fragile”, and stacked on end.
  19. To aid ventilation, avoid stacking or leaning furniture against outside walls.
  20. Cover your goods with sheets to protect from dust.
